Pimples are a normal but an extremely irritating skin condition which affects nearly everyone all over the world. They are inflammation of the skin caused when the sebaceous glands (oil glands) present beneath the skin get infected with bacteria and secrete excess sebum or oil. This leads to the glands swelling up and getting filled with pus.

Pimples, like other forms of acne, generally occur on the face, neck, back and the shoulders. Although pimples don’t cause any serious harm to one’s body, they do lower a person’s self-esteem. Take the following methods to prevent those annoying pimples.

1. Wash Your Face Twice Daily

Pimples are caused due to excess oil accumulating inside the skin, usually due to blocked pores. Washing your face is, thus, extremely important. It removes any excess oil from your skin while unclogging the pores, allowing your skin to breathe. You should wash your face twice a day with lukewarm water and use a clean dry towel to pat dry it. Washing the face too often can dry it out, so try not to do so.

2. Moisturize with Noncomedogenic Products

Washing your face can lead to it losing its natural oils and turning dry. To prevent dry skin, using a moisturizer afterwards is important. Be careful not to use oily moisturizers, as they can block your pores and cause a breakout of pimples. Instead, use products that say noncomedogenic on the pack, which essentially means that they’re designed to not block your pores. It is also important to have clean hands before applying moisturizer to prevent bacteria on your hands getting on your face.

3. Use Face Masks and Exfoliate Weekly

This is a good way on how to prevent pimples. It is a good idea to give your face a good cleaning once a week. You might want to use a face mask or an exfoliating product, as they can help clear your skin of any dead cells. However, these products might contain harsh materials not intended for daily use, which can harm your skin if used too often. Using these sparingly removes impurities and greatly reduces the chance of a pimple outbreak.

4. Never Overload Your Skin

While cosmetics and makeup might make you look better temporarily, they can be harmful to your skin if used too frequently. Makeup can block your pores and lead to a breakout. This holds true even for creams, lotions and gels, which should be used only as frequently as recommended on the pack in small amounts. Do remember to remove your make thoroughly using a face wash at the end of the day.

6. Keep Hands off Face

Your hands come in contact with a lot of germs and bacteria, which is why you should keep them away from your face at all times. Touching your face or popping pimples with hands is a horribly bad idea, as it can irritate the skin and make pimples redder and harder to get rid of. So, try to keep your hand away from your face at all cost.

7. Change Pillow Covers and Towels Regularly

Pillow covers and towels are things that come in contact with your face very often, so it is important to wash them to prevent pimple outbreaks. Dirty pillow covers and towels harbour a lot of bacteria that can lead to pimples, so you should wash them regularly. It is also a good idea to clean your makeup brushes and sponges every now and then to prevent bacteria growing there as well.

8. Maintain a Healthy Diet

Food lovers should know how to prevent pimples by maintaining healthy diet. Junk food, laden with sugars is most people’s favourite, but they’re not at all good for your skin. These foods are laden with loads of starch which is bad not only for your skin, but for your whole body. These foods can lead to a buildup of oil in your skin and lead to pimples. Eat more green vegetables because they contain vitamins A, E and C, which are great for the skin and act as antioxidants, flushing out the impurities from your skin.

9. Use Honey Face Masks

Honey works wonders for getting smooth skin for its natural antiseptics kill the bacteria that cause pimples. Besides, honey can acts as an antioxidant which helps exfoliate your skin. Simply apply some honey to your face and wash it off after 15-30 minutes to rid pimples and make your skin smoother and softer.

10. Try Lemons

Quite like honey, lemons are a great way to prevent and get rid of pimples. They work by killing the harmful bacteria and reducing the oil in your skin. Lemon also helps to fresh your skin and soothes the redness of your pimple. Besides, lemon juice also works to heal pimple scars. To get a pimple free skin, simply take some lemon juice in a bowl, dilute it with some water, and apply it to your face using a cotton swab.

11. Aloe Vera Is Your Friend

Aloe vera helps reduce redness, fight bacteria and prevent pimples from occurring and coming back. It acts as a moisturizer and removes excess oil and dirt from the skin, leading to the pimples disappearing only after a few tries. It also stimulates the skin cells to grow faster, helping removing pimple scars and promote repair of the damaged skin.

12. Be More Active

The 12th way for how to prevent pimples is – exercise. Exercise removes any toxins from your body through sweat and maintains normal hormonal levels, which leads to lesser breakouts of pimples. Just 30 minutes of exercise can go a long way for your skin and your body. One should not neglect sleep either, as that is when the body repairs itself.
